Governors

Welcome to our Governors section

Our team of Governors comprises a group of local people with a range of experience and expertise who are representatives of the local community. Many have a thorough working knowledge of the school and make a point of spending time in the classrooms with the children and staff. They attend training courses on all aspects of the curriculum and school management to ensure they have the necessary knowledge and skills to support the Head in the effective running of the school.

THE MAIN ROLES OF THE GOVERNING BODY ARE:

  • To achieve a strategic view. To focus on helping the school’s strategy for improvement so that pupils learn most effectively and achieve the highest standards.

  • To act as a critical friend. To provide the head teacher and staff with support, advice and information, drawing upon governors’ knowledge and experience. This is critical in the sense of the governing body’s responsibility for monitoring and evaluating the school’s effectiveness and as a friend because the governing body exists to promote the interests of the school and the wellbeing of the pupils.

  • To ensure accountability. The governing body is responsible for ensuring good quality education in the school. The head teacher and staff report to the governing body on the school’s performance and the governing body has the right to discuss, question and refine proposals, whilst always respecting the professional roles of the head teacher and other staff and their responsibilities for the management of the school. In its turn the governing body answers for its actions, above all to the parents and the wider local community for the school’s overall performance.

We feel that St Barnabas and St Paul’s CEPS is privileged to be such a caring, well-resourced school with a highly skilled and enthusiastic teaching and support staff that creates a stimulating and exciting learning environment. The atmosphere in the school and the enthusiasm with which the children approach their work, as well as the high quality of work achieved, makes us very proud of our school. We have the greatest confidence in recommending our school to you for your child, and hope that you will come to experience for yourself all the good things we have to offer.  The structure and remit of the Governing Body can be found below.

Staff Governors

Carla Martini

Headteacher

  • I have been at Headteacher of St Barnabas and St Paul’s primary school since January 2007.
  • I have a daughter aged 20 and a Son aged 21.
  • I was previously a deputy of a large Catholic school in Blackburn having started my career in Manchester in 1985. I have been  teaching for over 30 years and have witnessed incredible changes in schools over that time, not least in the role of the governing body. I feel very privileged to work with such committed, motivated and positive staff and governors at St Barnabas and St Paul’s.
  • It is a pleasure to work with such highly motivated, friendly and well behaved children. I am passionate about teaching and caring for children and giving them the best opportunities in primary education and their supportive parents.

 Joanna Duckworth

Assistant Headteacher

Christopher Holmes

Deputy Head Non-Voting

  • I have been the Deputy Headteacher of St Barnabas and St Paul's since 2008 and I am a teacher in Year 4.
  • I have a son aged 15.
  • I have been a Deputy Headteacher in three schools including this one and this is the best I have worked in. The teachers, parents and children all give their best to improve children’s chances in life at St Barnabas and St Paul’s. This commitment and enthusiasm is what makes this school different to others.
  • As a teacher in this school I want it to improve every year to make it even better from the last.

Janet Prowse

Chair of Governors

  • I have been involved in Education for the past 35 years as a primary teacher, Deputy Headteacher and latterly as a Primary Headteacher until my retirement in August 2015.
  • I have been the Chair of Governors since September 2012 and have seen the school change dramatically for the good over the years.
  • The school is a warm, welcoming Christian community and I am delighted to be a part of this.
  • I have two sons who are both involved in the legal profession and 2 young grandchildren one of whom has just started Primary School.

Governors

Sharon Roscoe

Vice Chair and Authority Governor

Andrew Pratt

Link Governor

  • I have been a Governor of the school for around 18 months.
  • I have a son aged 28 and two daughters aged 20 & 16.
  • I am a local shop keeper in Mill Hill.
  • I went to Witton Park High which is in the Blackburn area.
  • I have a keen interest in achievement of this school and have been more than happy with the current growth and success.

Heather Henderson

  • I have worked in Primary Education for the past 35 years as a Teacher, Senior Leader and Adviser, until my move north from Surrey due to my husband’s appointment as Bishop of Blackburn.
  • I was an Advisor for Guildford Diocese.
  • I now work part time as an Associate Advisor for Blackburn Diocese.
  • Our family all live down south but my husband and I have been given a very warm welcome to Lancashire.

Rev. Jonathan P. Milton – Thompson

Jamila Hounslow

  • I have two daughters aged 13 & 11.
  • I was born and raised in Blackburn and both my parents are of Indian heritage.
  • My early working career was in finance in the NHS here locally and then subsequently in various senior management positions in the NHS in Yorkshire and East Lancashire.
  • I also owned and ran a deli and café business in Clitheroe for several years.
  • More recently my time has been spent supporting families in the communities across Blackburn and specifically families of South Asian heritage. I speak both Gujarati and Urdu languages fluently.
  • I believe it is a great privilege to work with families and I really enjoy coming into the school, leading assemblies and leading the ‘nurture’ after-school club and just spending time with the children and teaching staff.
  • It’s a great buzz when I bump into the children and their families occasionally, when I am out and about in the local area running outreach activities, and they stop and say hello – it’s just great!

Parent Governors

Anwar Ismael

  • I have been nominated by the schoolchildren's parents in mid 2016 as a Parent governor.
  • I have been working as a volunteer with the Children's Society, Lancashire Mind, YMCA and the ARC Project (Wesley Hall) since early 2014.
  • I am qualified Civil/Geotechnical engineer, where I have spent about a decade in the construction and oilfields in the Middle East. However, I taught the Syrian Curriculum in a couple of Primary schools in Syria, including Maths, Science and English language.
  • I have been involved in the primary educational system since I can remember, as my father was a primary teacher. I have 7 siblings, 4 uncles and 3 brothers in law, all of whom are teachers at different levels.
  • I have three children attending St Barnabas & St Paul's school since April 2015. They are aged 5, 6 and 9 years old.  I have noticed incredible development since that time throughout every single term. In general, they have improved in all of their skills, especially  English language skills, mathematical analyses and social skills. This was a realistic result of combined efforts by the positive staff at school and assistance by us as parents.
  • My children are motivated by the proven equality at the school regardless of any personal characteristic differences; this has made it easier for them to feel safe, trusted and loved.
  • It is a privilege to be a part of this successful school, where I found a friendly teacher-parents atmosphere and share the responsibilities of building our children's society for a better future.
