This half term in literacy, we are looking at the book ‘The Jolly Postman’ as we look at the famous author Allan Ahlberg. We will be sequencing the story, inferencing character’s feelings, completing setting and character descriptions, making predictions and rewriting our own version of the story. We will be looking at different aspects of the grammar and punctuation curriculum too as well as completing a weekly comprehension.
In our numeracy lessons, we are focusing on length and height, position and direction plus time. We will continue to practice our column subtraction and addition methods. Once a week, we complete an arithmetic lesson so it is vital we know our 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables as they always come in handy!
This half term, our history topic is ‘Technology,’ where we will be learning about how technology has progressed over time. In science our topic is ‘Keeping Healthy’ looking at what a balanced diet consists of and how to keep our bodies healthy. Finally, in R.E we will be learning about the Christian place of worship-The Church. The children will be learning about its layout and the importance of items located a church, festivals that occur in a church and why a church is so important to Christians.
PE is taught on Monday afternoons – please ensure your child has their full PE kit in school so they can enjoy the gymnastics and striking and fielding games we learn.
Reading is an important part of school life and a skill that the children will use every day for the rest of their lives. Therefore, it is very important that you listen to your child read every night so their home reading books can be changed on a regular basis. The children’s progression in reading is crucial during this year in school. We aim to listen to your child read every day in class and they often get stories read to them, E.G. in literacy, before lunch time, in topic, at the end of the day and during our guided reading lessons.
Homework is given out every Friday and must be returned by the following Friday, so new homework can be set. The homework should be completed with the upmost respect and to the same standard the children would produce in their school books. We also have phonics spellings given out plus high frequency words that need to be learnt in year 2. In these high frequency word books, the children are to write the words out, then put them into sentences. This task will ensure the children spell common words correctly.
Please ensure your child comes to school in the correct uniform. They should look clean and respectful every day of the week. Uniform lists can be found in the prospectus (please ask the office for a copy if you require one).
I hope this information gives you a small insight into the hard work that goes on in class 2SB! Our classroom door is always open and we will see your children out at the end of the day. If you need to see us about anything – or just have a chat – please do not hesitate to come and see us.
Our priority is to ensure your children get the best results they can and enjoy the learning that takes place along the way.
We are very much looking forward to the year ahead.
