Class 5B

Welcome to Class 5B

Welcome to Class 5B’s page. Here you will find out what we are going to be learning this term. Miss Roberts is the class teacher and Miss Searson is the teaching assistant. All members of our class will aim to be the best for God that they can be. Our school value this half term is thankfulness and we will reflect on all we have to be thankful for during this difficult time.

In English this term we are focusing on Legends, especially the story of King Arthur. Our aim will be to write our own legend, before we develop our journalistic tone by using our knowledge of King Arthur to write a newspaper report. We will also be aiming to improve our handwriting by introducing the cursive lettering. Afterwards, we will be looking at stories by a significant author and our two feature texts will be ‘The Boy in the Dress’ by David Walliams and ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ by Onjali Rauf.

In Maths this term we will develop our understanding of place value, representation of number and our knowledge of Roman Numerals. We will also revisit the four main operations to consolidate our understanding whilst we also develop our reasoning and problem solving skills. After this, we will be looking at statistics where we will read and interpret data from graphs, charts and tables.

In Religious Education our unit of work is ‘The Bible’ and developing an understanding of how and why the Bible is used. We will also look at different versions of the Bible and why they are suitable for their target audience. We will look at the history behind the Lindisfarne Gospels. During this unit, we will also explore Holy Books from different faiths. Once we have completed this unit, we will learn about Christmas and the traditions in different countries around the world.

In Science this term, we will be investigating changing of materials and their properties. In Computing, we will be developing and creating our own computer game using Scratch as well as learning how to encrypt and decrypt messages using different codes. In Geography, our focus this term is Coasts and their features. In History this term, we will be learning about the Tudor dynasty. In Design and Technology, our unit is Building Bridges and we will be looking at the works of Santiago Calatrava and Joseph Strauss. In Art, we will be learning about Claude Monet and his impressionist style. In French, our focus will be developing vocabulary around the town and learning about Christmas in France. In Music, we will be listening to Living on a Prayer and identifying the different aspects of music within the song. In PSHE this term, we will be looking at healthy relationships and how to stay safe. In PE, we will be developing our fitness, balance, strength and flexibility through focused fitness and yoga session. After this, we will be putting this to the test in gymnastics before developing our skills in hockey.

By Year 5, we would expect all children to be confident and fluent when recalling times tables up to and including the 12 times tables. We also expect children to be reading daily for at least 15 minutes and this can include a variety of texts. Homework will be handed out every Friday and expected to be returned by the following Thursday. Children will receive weekly spellings as well as Maths and Literacy linked to that week’s focus.

All children are expected to wear correct PE kit to school on the day of their PE lesson - for us this is a Friday. This includes a plain white T-shirt; plain, black shorts or leggings and black pumps. Jewellery must not be worn on days when children will participate in PE.

Soon, we will be organising Meet the Teacher via the virtual platform of Zoom. We hope to see you there.
