Welcome to Class 5B
Welcome to Class 5B’s class page. Here you will find out what we are going to be learning this term. Miss Roberts is the class teacher and Miss Searson is the teaching assistant. All members of our class will live out our vision and become the best for God that they can be, in all they do. Our school values of hope, trust, compassion, forgiveness, thankfulness and perseverance will be at the forefront of everything that we do.
In English this term we are focusing on stories by the same author, especially the works of JK Rowling including Harry Potter. Our aim will be to write our own story in the style of JK Rowling, before we develop our persuasive writing by writing letters to Professor Dumbledore to persuade him to offer us a place at Hogwarts. We will also be aiming to improve our handwriting by continuing to write in the cursive lettering.
In Maths this term, we will develop our understanding of fractions including fraction representation, equivalent fractions as well as finding fractions of amounts. We will also revisit the four main operations to consolidate our understanding whilst we also develop our reasoning and problem solving skills. After this, we will be looking at decimals and percentages and using our knowledge of fractions to make connections and convert between these.
In Religious Education, our unit of work is ‘Why do Christians believe Easter is a celebration of Victory?’ We will look at the victory of Easter and why this is an important event for all Christians. We will also explore different events in the Bible which represent different victories. During this unit, we will also explore everyday victory and how we can be victorious in everything that we do.
In Science this term, we will be investigating forces. In Computing, we will be developing and creating our own web page about cyber safety. In History this term, we will be learning about the Victorian era. In Design and Technology, our unit is Brilliant Burgers where we will be designing and making burgers. In French, our focus will be learning the names of different types of food and comparing our own cuisine with the food from France. In Music, we will be listening to the Fresh Prince of Bel Air and identifying the different aspects of music within the song. In PSHE this term, we will be looking at prejudice, discrimination and inclusion. In PE, we will be developing our hand eye co-ordination through tennis.
By Year 5, we would expect all children to be confident and fluent when recalling times tables up to and including the 12 times tables. We also expect children to be reading daily for at least 15 minutes and this can include a variety of genres and texts. Homework will be handed out every Friday and expected to be returned by the following Thursday. Children will receive weekly spellings as well as Maths and Literacy linked to that week’s focus.
Our PE lessons will take place on each Friday and we ask that children come to school in their PE kits on this day. All children are expected to wear the correct PE kit which includes: a plain white T-shirt, black shorts or leggings and black pumps. Jewellery must not be worn on days when children participate in PE.
