Phonics information

At St Barnabas and St Paul's Primary School, we know how important it is for teachers and parents to work together to give your child the best start. Reading together at home is one of the easiest but most important ways in which you can help your child. To support your child in becoming an effective and confident reader we hope to work with you to develop their knowledge of phonics (letter sounds) to enable them to decode different words they may come across. At the start of every academic year, each Reception and Keystage 1 class engages in daily phonics teaching sessions.

 

At St Barnabas and St Paul's we follow the Government guidance with regards to 6 phases of phonics teaching. This six phase teaching programme focuses on high quality phonic work. The Intention is to “…equip children who are 5 with the phonic knowledge and skills they need to become fluent readers by the age of 7.” By the end of Year Two, children should have completed Phase 6. Class teachers assess which phase each child should be working on and then appropriate teaching is planned and delivered accordingly.

Phonics

At St Barnabas and St Paul’s we use Phonics Play resources as a fun, interactive tool to engage children in the learning of sounds. The resources provide exciting ways to encourage the children to segment and blend sounds, progressing through the phases as they learn.

Phonics provides the building blocks of learning to read and write.

 

In Reception children learn Phase 1 (listening for, making and saying different sounds), Phase 2 (the sounds the letters of the alphabet make, what they look like and how we can put them together to read – blending or split words into them for spelling - segmenting). They begin to learn to read tricky words, Phase 3 (How letters are written, the 44 sounds in the English language including digraphs – 2 sounds working together e.g. sh as in shop - and trigraphs – 3 sounds working together e.g. igh as in night. Throughout this phase children begin to read and write simple sentences. Children also learn to write as well as read tricky words.

 

In Year 1 children learn Phase 4, focusing on words that have consonants together, then Phase 5. During Phase 5 teaching, children learn all the different ways a sound can be written e.g. ee (sheep) can be written ea (tea), e_e (here), ie (field), y (happy), ey (monkey). They learn the different pronunciation of sounds e.g. a in hat, acorn, what. They continue reading and writing sentences and learning more high frequency words.

 

In Year 2 children learn Phase 6. In this phase children learn about past tense and spelling patterns such as word endings (suffixes) such as ‘-ed’ and word beginnings (prefixes) such as ‘un-’. They learn to spell longer words and develop more independence when reading and spelling.

 

Reading scheme EYFS

At St Barnabas and St Paul’s we use Dandelion Reader and Dandelion Launcher books in order to give children the best start in segmenting and blending Phase 2 sounds, before progressing onto Phase 3 when they are comfortable and confident.

 

Reading scheme KS1

At St Barnabas and St Paul's we use the UK's number one reading programme which gives children the very best start. With systematic phonics at its heart, Oxford Reading Tree's well-loved characters, breadth and unrivalled support make this a must for every school. This is used alongside the Dandelion Readers and Launcher books to provide comprehensive coverage of letter sounds and phonic skills.

 

We use our reading books to;

  • Teach - using systematic phonics resources and training that really work
  • Practice - with more decodable readers than any other reading programme

    Offer richer reading - through a huge selection of stories with children's best-loved characters
  • Bridge the gap - with support for the transition from phonics into richer reading
  • Make progress - through careful levelling
  • Support Parents - with detailed inside cover notes in every book
