Multiplication check and TTRS

Multiplication Tables Check

The multiplication tables check (MTC) is statutory for all year 4 pupils.

The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will help schools to identify pupils who have not yet mastered their times tables, so that additional support can be provided.

The MTC is an on-screen check consisting of 25 times table questions. Children will be able to answer 3 practice questions before taking the actual check. They will then have 6 seconds to answer each question. On average, the check should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.

Multiplication Tables Check Information

At St Barnabas and St Paul's, we use Times Tables Rock Stars to time the children in answering multiplication questions and reward them with badges as their times improve. Times Tables Rock Stars is a website that schools subscribe to, giving them the resources to encourage and inspire their students to not only learn the basics of the maths curriculum, but to enjoy it. It is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice aimed to encourage children to learn and practice their times tables more. We also have weekly competitions where children can play against each other.

As part of our enrichment overview we offer a Times Tables Rock Stars club for children in Year 4 to assist with when mastering their times tables, ready for their Multiplication Tables Check.
