Welcome to Class 1B


Welcome to Class 1B! My name is Miss Rafique and I am the class teacher. I love working in Year 1 where we are busy bees and work incredibly hard! This year we are very fortunate to have Miss Desai and Mrs Harrison working with us and helping us with our learning. At St Barnabas and St Paul’s, we endeavour to be the best for God that we can be, in all we do, and this vision helps guide us through our school days. We always aim high, upholding high expectations and standards in everything we do. Year 1 is an exciting year as our pupils move from the Foundation Stage and settle into a busy new timetable and lots of hard work!


During this transitional year, we aim to instil some of our school’s core values into our pupils, such as ‘perseverance’, ‘trust’ and ‘compassion’ as these will enable our children to develop into resilient, caring individuals who support their class mates. In turn, this creates a positive learning environment in which children are confident to tackle the challenges of Year 1. We have a lot of fun learning in our classroom, which is a bright and colourful learning environment, to show off all of our fantastic achievements and progress.


Due to the unprecedented circumstances this year, learning has proved to be different in parts. However, we will have a rigorous ‘Catch up’ programme in place to support your children to cover gaps in areas of learning.


Here you will find out a little about what is going on in our class this term.


In Literacy, we will be exploring ‘Adventure Stories’ in particular The Tales of Peter Rabbit. We will begin this unit by researching the author Beatrix Potter. Our Literacy learning will involve hot seating, character profiles, and descriptions. We will also be building on our lessons weekly to work towards writing our own stories using our imaginations and creative writing skills. Our final unit for the term will cover ‘Instructions’ where we will be getting our gardening gloves on to follow instructions to plant our very own Cress seeds. Please continue to work with your children to practice pre-cursive handwriting, capital letters, full stops and finger-spaces.


In Mathematics we will be exploring ‘Measurement’. Our initial focus will be Length and Height, moving onto Weight and Volume. We will conduct lots of practical learning, as well as theoretical work in order to practise and develop our skills further. Please continue to work on number concepts at home with your children, such as tens and ones, number bonds and counting forwards and backwards in 2s, 5s, 10s to help embed their learning.


In Religious Education we will be covering Easter, exploring the concept of New Life. We will be reading Bible stories, taking part in class discussions and completing exciting Easter-themed activities. We hope to build upon the children’s understanding of Christianity and our school values.

Our Geography lessons this term will focus on ‘The Lake District’, exploring key human and physical features of that area. In Science, our topic this term is ‘Animals, including Humans’. In these lessons, we will be exploring animal groupings, diets and features, as well as comparing them. In Computing, our area of learning will be ‘We are Collectors’. We will be virtual collectors and enhance our mouse and keyboard skills when finding images using the internet. Our Art and DT topics will be ‘Earth Art’ and ‘Animal Hotels’. In our French lessons, we will learn French phrases and explore the concept of Chinese New Year and learn how that is celebrated in France. Our Music topic will be ‘Round and Round’, in which we will explore Latin Bossa Nova style music pieces. Our PSHCE lessons will focus on ‘Families and Friends’ through which we will develop our understanding of the consequences of right and wrong, as well as making and keeping positive relationships. Finally, in P.E we will be covering ‘Invasion’ in particular sending and receiving. We will build on our ball skills including dribbling, using our hands and feet to send and receive and we will practise the idea of attacking and defending, to work towards playing games of Football in teams.


Phonics is also an integral part of our daily learning in Year 1. This term we will continue to cover and recap Phase 5 learning where children will be practicing reading, writing words and sentences with alternative phonemes, split digraphs and homophones. Please continue to support your children in this area as Phonics is the key for children to unlock other areas of the curriculum. Homework will be sent home on a Friday and collected throughout the week. Children should also bring a water bottle to school every day. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that children should arrive at school wearing the correct PE kit on their designated PE day (for us this is a Wednesday). This consists of a white t-shirt, black shorts/jogging bottoms/tracksuit bottoms, black pumps/trainers and their blue school jumper.
