Class 5P

Welcome to Class 5P

Welcome to Class 5P’s class page. Here, you will find out what we are going to be learning this term. Miss Chadwick is the class teacher and Miss Newman and Miss Patel are the teaching assistants. All members of our class will live out our vision and become the best for God that they can be, in all they do. Our school values of hope, trust, compassion, forgiveness, thankfulness and perseverance will be at the forefront of everything that we do.

In English this term, we are focusing on the novel ‘The London Eye Mystery’ by Siobhan Dowd. During this unit, we will cover a range of writing genres including: diary, newspaper report and a formal letter. Throughout the term, we will be continuing to draw inferences about characters’ thoughts, feelings and motives within our Reading lessons. We will continue to develop our grammatical skills and handwriting within this unit.

In Maths this term, we will develop our understanding of decimals and percentages and, using our knowledge of fractions, to make connections and convert between these. We will also revisit the four main operations to consolidate our understanding whilst we also develop our reasoning and problem solving skills. After this, we will be looking at properties of shape, position and direction of shape. Towards the end of the school year, we will focus on converting units of measure and volume.

In Religious Education, our unit of work is ‘Exploring the lives of significant women in the Old Testament.’  We will be learning about a number of stories from the Bible involving women who created an impact on the lives of others. By the end of this topic, pupils will be able to name a significant woman linked to the Christian religion and summarise their story. After this, we will learn about Daniel and discuss whether he made the right choices.

In Science this term, we will be learning about: Animals including Humans and Living Things and their Habitats. In Computing, we will be developing and creating our own video game. After this in Computing, we will be focusing on Word Processing. In Geography, we will be learning about the region of South Wales. In History this term, we will be carrying out a local study of Blackburn during the Industrial Revolution. In Design and Technology, we will be designing and making our own moveable toy. In Art and Design, we will study the works of Vincent Van Gogh. In French, our focus will be learning about types of food and comparing our own cuisine with the food from France, before moving on to Weather and Where I Live. In Music, our focus will be on Motown and Classical Music. We will be listening to and identifying the different aspects of music within our focus song ‘Dancing in the Street’ and then we will reflect upon Classical Music. In PSHE this term, we will be discussing ‘Healthy Relationships’ and ‘Changing Me’. In PE, we will be developing our athletic and cricket skills.

By Year 5, we would expect all children to be confident and fluent when recalling times tables up to and including the 12 times table. Our main focus for the remainder of this year is to work on our presentation within all of our written work. We expect all pupils to complete all work to their highest standard and try their very best in all that they do. We also expect children to be reading daily for at least 15 minutes and this should include a variety of genres and texts.

Homework will be set each week, on Fridays, and it is expected to be returned by the following Thursday. All children have received a Homework book with their individual log in details for all of the relevant websites that they will need in order to complete their Homework tasks. Homework will consist of a Maths and English activity linked to that week’s focus and a more creative and practical activity linked to our foundation subjects.

This term, Year 5 pupils will need to wear their PE kits on Thursdays. All children are expected to wear the correct PE kit which includes: a plain white T-shirt, black shorts or leggings and black pumps. Jewellery must not be worn on days when children participate in PE. On sunnier days, please ensure your children are wearing sun cream as our lessons will be outside.
