Class 5P

Welcome to Class 5P

Welcome to Class 5P’s page. Here you will find out what we are going to be learning this term along with other useful information and resources. Miss Chadwick is the class teacher and Miss Newman and Miss Patel are the teaching assistants. All members of our class will live out our vision and become the best for God that they can be, in all they do. Our school values of hope, trust, compassion, forgiveness, thankfulness and perseverance will be at the forefront of everything that we do.

In English this term, we are focusing on Science Fiction stories, particularly focusing on Bug Wars by Tom Bradman. Our aim will be to develop and write our own science fiction story based on the texts we have studied in class. During this term, we will also be looking at information booklets, poems with a structure and magazine information texts. We will also be aiming to improve our handwriting by continuing to write in cursive lettering.

In Maths this term, we will develop our understanding of fractions including fraction representation and equivalent fractions, as well as finding fractions of amounts. We will also revisit the four main operations to consolidate our understanding whilst we also develop our reasoning and problem solving skills. After this, we will be looking at decimals and percentages and using our knowledge of fractions to make connections and convert between these.

In Religious Education, our unit of work is ‘Exploring Loss, Death and Christian Hope.’  We will share our own thoughts and beliefs about what we think happens to a person when they die and what we imagine Heaven to look like. During this unit, we will explore the Bible and what it says about death and Heaven whilst comparing them to the beliefs of Christians.  By the end of this topic, pupils will understand that Christians believe in the promise of living forever with God as a result of the death and resurrection of Jesus. After this, we will learn about Easter and why Christians believe that it is a celebration of victory.

In Science this term, we will be investigating forces. In Computing, we will be developing and creating our own spreadsheets and databases. In Geography, we will be learning about the continent of Africa. In History this term, we will be learning about the Victorian era. In Design and Technology, we will be designing and making our own spring rolls in preparation for Chinese New Year. In French, our focus will be learning about hobbies and sports before moving on to learning the names of different types of food and comparing our own cuisine with the food from France. In Music, our focus will be on Pop Ballads and Old-school Hip Hop. We will be listening to and identifying the different aspects of music within our focus songs ‘Make You Feel My Love’ and ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’. In PSHE this term, we will be looking at setting goals and dreams for the future as well as learning about the importance of healthy lifestyles. In PE, we will be developing our physical, social and thinking skills by completing outdoor and adventurous activities. We will also continue with our swimming lessons on a Wednesday afternoon this term, where pupils will continue to develop their swimming skills and understanding of water safety.

By Year 5, we would expect all children to be confident and fluent when recalling times tables up to and including the 12 times tables. Our main focus this year is to work on our presentation within all of our written work. We expect all pupils to complete all work to their highest standard and try their very best in all that they do. We also expect children to be reading daily for at least 15 minutes and this can include a variety of genres and texts.

Homework will be set each week, on Fridays, and it is expected to be returned by the following Thursday. All children have received a Homework book with their individual log in details for all of the relevant websites that they will need in order to complete their Homework tasks. Homework will consist of ten weekly spellings, a Maths and English activity linked to that week’s focus and a more creative and practical activity linked to our foundation subjects.

This term, Year 5 pupils will continue attending swimming lessons on Wednesdays. We ask that all Year 5 children attend school every Wednesday wearing their PE kits and bring their swimming kits with them in a bag. All children are expected to wear the correct PE kit which includes: a plain white T-shirt, black shorts or leggings and black pumps. Jewellery must not be worn on days when children participate in PE. For swimming lessons, children will be required to bring a clean, dry towel; a swimsuit and a swimming cap (for those children with long hair) in a suitable bag.
