Reading Ambassadors
Reading Ambassadors
Reading is very important at St Barnabas and St Paul’s. We know that much research has shown that children who read regularly at home perform better at school. Our Reading Ambassadors provide a children’s voice in how we promote reading throughout the school.
Pupils from Years 4 – 6 have been chosen for their love of reading, their willingness to share this passion with others and enthusiasm to promote reading.
Their responsibilities include:
Listening to younger children read each week
Keeping classroom reading spaces presentable and engaging
Organising our reading shed
Holding regular story time sessions in the reading shed at lunchtimes
Sharing book reviews and recommendations with their classes.
Helping with reading events across the school.
Student-led reading mentoring
The reading ambassador scheme brings reading to life by pairing confident readers from Key Stage 2 with younger pupils who are still building their skills — creating a supportive, low-pressure environment where reading confidence can grow. Inspired by the DfE Reading Framework aim that every child “gains the fluency and confidence to read for pleasure,” the scheme helps remove the fear of getting things wrong and replaces it with encouragement. While developing readers benefit from relaxed, peer-to-peer support, reading ambassadors gain a meaningful boost in responsibility, confidence, and self-esteem.
